Dear Dr. Hilwig,
You were one of the most amazing teachers I have had the honor to have in my life. From my first freshman quarter with you, I made sure no one else taught me about history. I learned so very much from you and loved how you taught. I enjoyed getting to know you and thank-you so very much for being on my review board for my senior thesis (and falling asleep during my defense)! Kinda funny. You were incredibly supportive to me on a personal level, I was able to discuss many things with you. I was so very happy to see your transformation...you were always a happy fellow, but when you met Stephanie and created a family, it was a happiness that was very good to you and your spirit. I know you left the world being loved by your family, and by many, many others, including me. I found out New Years Eve from another Adams Alumni, and I spent my midnight hour into the new year meditating and sending you and your family positive thoughts. What came across my mind through this meditation was that the best thing I can do for you, is to do my best and teach and help others...be the best person I can be. In this way, your legacy will be long lasting into History. My heart goes out to your family - Stephanie and your children, and everyone who lost an amazing spirit in their life. Goodbye Dr. Hilwig.

I was in a freshman seminar class taught by Dr. Hilwig in 2002 called "Greed is Good?". It was one of the most enlightening classes that I took at ASC. We talked about consumerism, social injustice, and corporate globalism. We read "Fast food nation" then took a trip to Mc D's so we could see the 'behind the scenes amazingness' (quite disturbing). I remember watching a video about how Wal-mart forces the construction of its stores down the throats of every town it can. Then Stu organized a field trip for us to visit Wal-mart. We pretended to be a business class wanting to 'learn about their successful business model', but awhile into it we started asking the hard questions about manufacturing, workers rights and unions, etc. As you can imagine, this really caught them off guard! It was a really fun class, but Dr. Hilwig expected us to think critically and actively participate in discussion, which was a very good thing. After the course was finished Stu was always friendly and did not hesitate to chat with me whenever we met up. I'm saddened by the loss of such a great person.
rest in peace Dr. Hilwig

Dr Hilwig was a great professor and person. He truly loved his family. He spoke of them fondly in class, and he and I often compared notes on raising our kids. I didn't see Stu together with Stephanie very often, but when I did it was alway so obvious how proud that he was to be by her side. He held his head a little higher and seemed to give on an air as if he was with his queen. My last memory of Stu was he and Stephanie passing by in the hallway of McDaniel Hall the friday before the accident. I think I commnented to somebody at the time on how proud he seemed. I pray that Jack and Charlie will always remeber how much they were loved.

Stuart,

This is surreal - can’t believe you are gone. You put up quite a fight. I am so proud of you. Not only proud to call you my cousin, but also my friend and confidant. I think back to last Thanksgiving when we all went skiing. I had no ski clothes, but you and Aunt Connie wouldn’t settle for this. You had me buy long underwear at the resort, rent skis, and had me ski in my skirt. You taught me how to live. For each day was precious to you. It was amazing watching you and Stephanie teach your beautiful children how to ski. Even after all of your heart surgeries you never gave up. It reminded me of our annual family Christmas trips to Shawnee where my father taught you (and The Hilwig Boys) to ski. Funny how history repeats itself, but you already knew this as a historian.

Stuart, thank you for always making time for me even when it wasn’t convenient. This was one of your many gifts. You made the time: during our childhood, on your trips home from college (playing pool-you were “Minnesota Fats” and I “The Pennsylvania Express”-certainly unearned titles), on our Ohio State visits (pasta in white clam sauce), during your new life in Colorado (dating Stephanie-confessing she’s the one) or while visiting me in California. Stu, you were a blessing to our family and to your own. I am so glad you had the opportunity to be a father and a husband. This was one of your most prized accomplishments.

Stuart Hilwig, you were a good man. So to borrow from our final history lesson together, Dr. Stuart J Hilwig, you were truly a “Friend of the People” (Hilwig on Marat). I will never forget you.

Stuart, I can’t say goodbye. So please leave a light on in heaven for me…until we meet again my friend.

Forever Your Cousin,
Ginger Fiore

Adams State University, Alamosa, and most importantly his family lost a wonderful teacher, man, husband, and father today. Dr. Stuart J. Hilwig was loved by all his students, he had a wonderful sense of humor, a great laugh, and could make any day better. I always looked forward to going to his classes because he was such a wonderful teacher and because he had a way of making his students feel special and enjoy the time they spent with him. Everyone who know him lost a piece of themselves when he died. I will miss my friend greatly!! R.I.P Dr. Hilwig I hope to see you again in Heaven!

I was in Stu's very first class at Adams.
Stu was a pivitol inspiration in my life. His lectures on the potential evils of modernization and industrilization, which he examplified through the Holocaust, were the catalyst for my questioning of our modern society and lead me to pursue a masters degree in sociolgy. He truly was a wonderful person and I am so lucky to have had the honor to have been one of his students.
RIP Stu!
